How to Pay Your SEVIS Fee from Ghana
If you're a Ghanaian student heading to the United States, you need to pay the SEVIS I-901 fee before your visa interview. This guide walks you through every option — and shows you the fastest way to get it done.
What is the SEVIS fee?
The SEVIS I-901 fee is a mandatory payment required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for all international students and exchange visitors. You must pay it before your visa interview at the U.S. Embassy. The fee funds the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), which tracks students in the U.S.
Why can't Ghanaian students pay directly?
The official SEVIS payment website (fmjfee.com) requires a U.S.-issued credit or debit card, or international cards that many Ghanaian banks don't support for such payments. Your options are limited to:
- 1. Western Union Quick Pay — high fees, limited availability in Ghana
- 2. U.S. bank check or money order — nearly impossible from Ghana
- 3. Have someone in the U.S. pay on your behalf — requires a trusted contact
- 4. Use a payment service like SevisGo — pay in Cedis, get your receipt in hours
